Maxi Dress

Early in 2013 our second daughter, Frosty (nom de plume), was expecting her first baby. Frosty was working in retail and needed to wear black, business type attire. Pants were no longer fitting well due to the growing baby bump. Frosty had a look around for a maxi dress but was unable to find anything suitable. She asked if I would be able to make one.

I used the pattern below as a base for the dress.

I then adjusted the pattern pieces to what Frosty wanted. No bow at the front, the front scooped and the back with a “V” slightly deeper than the scoop at the front. The sleeves finished just above the elbow. Frosty also wanted the dress to be full length.

I used a heavy-weight cotton knit. I created facings for the front and back as the pattern used a different method.

I then re-draughted the front and back pattern pieces to get what I wanted. Front pattern piece below.

And back.

Below are some photos of the finished dress. The front first.

And the back.

And a closer view of the back showing how it dips lower than the front. The colour depth isn’t the greatest!
Frosty found the dress very comfortable with the bonus that it accommodated her growing baby bump. She was able to wear the two dresses I made through to the ninth month of her pregnancy.
Frosty and her partner, Jester (nom de plume), gave birth to a son in May 2013. He is a gorgeous wee boy and on my blogs is called Mr Magoo.
